Book Launch: Civic Work, Civic Lessons: Two Generations Reflect on Public Service

Discussion Topic: Making a Meaningful Difference to Society through your Social Start-up

Professor Thomas Ehrlich is Visiting Professor at the Stanford Graduate School of Education. He has previously served as President of Indiana University, Provost of the University of Pennsylvania and Dean of Stanford Law School. He has also held a number of public-service positions since the administration of U.S. President John F. Kennedy. Professor Ehrlich was the first head of the Legal Services Corporation and was the first Director of the International Development Cooperation agency responsible for foreign-aid policy, reporting directly to U.S. President Carter.

Besides "Civic Work, Civic Lessons: Two Generations Reflect on Public Service". Professor Ehrlich is also an author, co-author or editor of thirteen other books. This includes, "Educating Citizen: Preparing America’s Undergraduates for Lives of Moral and Civic Responsibility" and "Educating for Democracy: Preparing Undergraduates for Responsible Political Engagement".

Professor Ehrlich is a graduate of Harvard College and Harvard Law School, holds five honorary degrees and is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Ernestine Fu is a PhD student in engineering at Stanford University, where she completed her bachelor's and master's degrees. She has been engaged in civic work since the age of fifteen when she founded a non-profit to bring music to seniors, disabled people, and homeless families. She has also helped a national corporation fund youth-led service projects and is now on the federal advisory committee shaping a new service center at the Presidio in California.

Fu also works as a Senior Associate at Alsop Louie Partners, a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley, and closed her first deal at the age of nineteen. She has been featured on the cover of Forbes Magazine, as well as on lists such as Forbes' 30 Under 30 in Finance, Vanity Fair's Next Establishment List, and Business Insider's Silicon Valley 100 List.

Fu was chosen for the Kauffman Fellowship on entrepreneurship and is an active supporter of social entrepreneurs.
